Here is the second installment of the important astrological events of 2022. If you missed Part 1, check it out here.
The Nodes of the Moon enter Taurus/Scorpio
What are Lunar Nodes?
Great question! First, I’ll share the technical definition and then move into its symbolism in astrology.
The Lunar Nodes are two points in space where the Moon’s orbit crosses the earth’s orbit or ecliptic plane. Think of these two points as an axis, functioning together. The North Node is the point created by the Moon’s orbit crossing the ecliptic plane from southern to northern latitudes. The South Node is the point made by the Moon’s orbit crossing the ecliptic plane from north to southern latitudes.
In astrology, the symbolism of the Lunar Nodes differs among the branches of astrology, and some branches omit them altogether.
In my practice of astrology, the North Node in a natal chart represents the evolutionary intention of the current life, while the South Node represents the unresolved past. The unresolved past can include birth to early adulthood or past lives if that aligns with your belief system.
When looking at the transiting Lunar Nodes, as we’re doing here, every 19 months, it shifts back into a different set of signs starting at 29°. These signs indicate the themes we’ll collectively integrate over many months.
Most importantly, the transiting Lunar Nodes is where eclipses occur. Eclipses are like a course correction ordained by the universe. Anything you haven’t yet released voluntarily will likely do so now. There is a sense that you are in a period of accelerated growth, not under your control. The critical thing to remember is that this is happening for your highest good, even when it doesn’t feel or look the case.
The Nodes in Taurus/Scorpio: January 18, 2022 – July 17, 2023
These last couple of years with the transiting Nodes moving through Gemini/Saggitarius, we’ve had to reassess what we believe, how to filter new information, and how to determine truth. All of this uncovered unhealthy or faulty reasoning within us that needed integrating.
Now and until July 17, 2023, the transiting North Node in Taurus and the transiting South Node in Scorpio will usher in a new period of opportunities for growth and integration of past unresolved issues.
The Lunar Nodes in Taurus/Scorpio is helping us rebuild something more productive and sustainable from what has been or will be destroyed.
The process of composting is a valuable metaphor here. Tiny microbes eat organic waste and break it down into something simpler and fertile. During the Nodes transit through Taurus/Scorpio, think about how you can channel personal desires into something productive while honoring your resources and body.
Other ways to think about the transit of the Taurus/Scorpio Lunar Nodes include:
- Calm vs. Intensity
- Holding on vs. Letting go
- Self-possession vs. Possessiveness
- Indulgence vs. Self-denial
- Simple vs. Complex
- Stability vs. Transformation
It’s important to keep in mind that the ultimate goal is for integration. How can these seemingly opposite themes support each other more healthily?
Astrology works in cycles, so we’ve been here before. Roughly every 18.5 years, the Nodes return to the same signs. The last periods when the North Node was in Taurus and South Node in Scorpio were: Apr. 2003 to Dec. 2004; Sept. 1984 to May 1986; and Feb. 1966 to Aug. 1967.
If you were born in any of those time-frames, happy Nodal Return!
Like any general astrological overview, it’s important to locate these areas in your natal chart to gain further insights. The specific Houses impacted by the transiting Nodes are key significators for interpretation.
2022 Taurus/Scorpio Eclipses
The chart below provides information on the two “Eclipse Seasons” of 2022, one in the Spring and the other in the Autumn.
Eclipse energy can be active two weeks ahead of the dates provided and up to 3 months afterward. Because Taurus and Scorpio are fixed energies, their eclipses tend to be long-lasting and final.
Personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, etc.) and points (Ascendant, Midheaven, etc.) in Taurus or Scorpio will increase the impact of these eclipses.
Date & Time (PST) | Eclipse Type | Eclipse Degree |
April 30 at 1:41 pm | Partial Solar | 10° Taurus |

Jupiter in Aries
Jupiter enters Aries on May 10, 2022, just in time to ignite our passions for a fresh start in mid-Spring. This giant gas ball will spend its time in Aries, boosting your courage to make your way through the new normal.
Jupiter symbolizes benevolence, faith, expansion, belief, and exploration in astrology. Any activities that bring about growth through direct experience and risk-taking are areas where Jupiter thrives. It governs foreign travel, higher education, philosophy, and religion.
The sign Aries represents the initial spark. Think birth and the beginning of Spring. Pure lifeforce emerging, but not without challenges. It’s never an easy path for the person who goes first in anything.
The Pioneer is very much an archetype of Aries. It is not something you do via a mental exercise. It involves action. Jupiter in Aries will compel us to meet the challenge of shaping the world around us in a real way.
This transit will likely usher us into the post-pandemic life we’ve been eagerly awaiting. But as one challenge ends, we’ll likely face others. The issues revealed during the last three years are still with us and require us to face them head-on.
Finally, Jupiter in Aries will also support adventure, advocacy, and your will to thrive despite the collective chaos.
How to approach Jupiter in Aries?
Jupiter’s transit through Aries is an excellent time to ask, “What kinds of experience will help me feel more faith in myself?” In particular, in the area of life described by Aries. Check your natal chart to find out. This is where you need to have the courage to reclaim faith in yourself.
To have courage, you need a challenging situation or adversary. What kinds of experiences are you ready to take on? Jupiter in Aries is the “Call to Adventure” in the Hero’s Journey framework. Success is only dependent on hearing and accepting the call at this stage.
Embarking on this new adventure can look like many things, but choose a challenge worthy of who you want to be. After Jupiter’s transit through Aries, you will never be the same.
Jupiter will briefly fall back into Pisces on October 27 but will firmly re-enter Aries on December 20, continuing this transit into 2023.
Mars retrograde
The part of you that initiates action out in the world is represented by Mars. It’s motivating, surviving, protective, and instinctual. But what happens when it goes retrograde by transit?
Transiting Mars will retrograde from October 30, 2022, to January 12, 2023, in Gemini. It infrequently retrogrades, occurring about every two years. This is a period when actions and motivations are up for review. If the obtainment of your desires were driven by a pressure to conform, you’ll discover that now. Some symptoms of a Mars retrograde to watch for are the release of suppressed anger, burn-out, apathy, or violence.
Navigated well, this Mars retrograde cycle is a good opportunity to unburden yourself from activities and patterns of behavior that are no longer in alignment. By the end of this retrograde journey, a renewed approach to how you go after and protect your desires.
There is more to this story because Mars will retrograde between 25° to 8° Gemini. The sign where Mars spends its retrograde period contributes to the developing themes. In general, Mars in Gemini stimulates all things perception. It initiates through speaking, teaching, and learning to bring about new ways of seeing the world. This Mars is motivated by intellectual challenges and ideas that disrupt for good or ill will.
In a world besieged by deliberate misinformation, the Mars retrograde in Gemini may provide a period to reassess the harm caused and how to get ourselves back to more constructive discourse.
For you personally, keep an eye on the intentions behind your communications. Self-criticism may be on the rise. This period may also see many people under mental distress and use it as an excuse to take inappropriate actions against themselves or others.
Be kind and patient with each other and seek physical exercise to calm the mind whenever possible.
How to Keep Your Mars Happy during Mars Retrograde
You have a natal Mars somewhere in your chart. No matter where it sits regarding the current Mars retrograde cycle, it will likely active this aspect of self. So, how do you help your Martian sensibilities be constructive instead of destructive? Here are a few ideas:
- Go on a fun adventure
- Play sports or intellectually challenging games
- Fight for a cause you care about
- Learn a martial art such as Aikido, Taekwondo, Tai Chi, or Capoeira
- Challenge your perceptions
- Enjoy passionate (and playful) sex
- Speak up. Find your voice and use it for good
- Investigate a topic of your choosing that genuinely motivates you
- Enroll in conflict resolution training
This is not the end
Well, technically, it’s the end of this article. That said, use these articles (Part 1 and 2) as a resource. Revisit the wisdom shared here throughout the year, whenever you need to rebalance, ground, or need encouragement to push through difficult times.
I highly recommend checking out my article on the Moon, “Healing Powers of the Moon and How to Align with It.” Whatever the major transits are of the moment, your natal Moon serves as an ever-present guide to healing, self-care, and happiness.
